Post image for To Recover or Not to Recover

That is the question of the day!

This chair is currently in my husbands “man room”, but it is about to be moved to my home office. While this chair is fine for the back, rarely visited by me room, it’s not quite up to par to go into the FRONT room of the house.

Here is my dilemma: I love this chair, it’s comfy, it’s big, it has a pull out twin bed, and all too important storage in the ottoman; HOWEVER, it’s going to cost me a pretty penny to have it recovered. I mean, I can buy a new chair for what it would cost me, but the new chair wouldn’t have the bed or the storage…so…what is a girl to do!

I bring this to the Tipsy readers because I’m having a hard time convincing my hubby that recovering the chair is the way to go…am I completely off my rocker here????

If you don’t recover the chair, I’ll gladly take it off your hands.

I’m on Team Recover! My mom has “renovated” her childhood sofa and club chair/ottoman like, 4 times over the years and has never regretted it. She’s never found a new set that she liked better (both in design/function AND aesthetics) so it’s been worth it to keep the bones and change up the fabrics and patterns. Good luck!

Re-cover! I love the idea of updating a piece of furniture with new fabric.

I vote recover as well. You wouldn’t get much for a used chair on Craigslist and I’ve learned the hard way lately that comfy chairs are hard to find. All the cheap options are really firm, and you’d be dropping around $600 even at Ashley furniture for something similar with ottoman

However, if you need to save up for a little while, you could get some modern pillow covers from Etsy or West End/Z Gallerie/Target and jazz it up until you are ready to spend the money. You could also get a leather storage ottoman from overstock.com for around $250 to minimize the amount of taupe chenille in your room. Combined with cool graphic pillows, you just might like it for long term. :)

I vote re-cover also…I have an old rocker that has cushions that were recovered and I love that chair so much…the old fabric was butt ugly and the chair would have been chunked had it not been for recovering. I would hate to chunk my grandfather’s rocking chair–it’s sentimental.

I think you should get some funky pillows, and “coordinating pillow cases for the chair and then make/buy a slip cover for the ottoman…much cheaper than recovering. You could probably find a seamstress via your local fabric store!

I agree with Kristy– I think you should just get new, awesome pillows and a new throw to change the “look” of the chair.

You will appreciate it so much more if you recover it! Trust me.

Long-time reader, first poster here. I’ll be honest- keep the chair- it is really nice! I wouldn’t recover it though either, I’d spiff it up with new pillows and a gorgeous throw and call it a day. I think it looks like a nice piece of furniture, it’s neutral and you change out the pillows and throws regularly… just my thoughts though- I’m all about cheap/ lazy decorating.
