To Gown or Not to Gown?

So, I’ve been having this little debate with my mother on baby gowns such as the ones below. My mom swears by them like they are the best thing since sliced bread or some type of miracle baby outfit that I can not and will not want to live without. See, sure she is experienced with children, but that was also almost 3 decades ago.  So, what’s the deal? Are gowns the way to go? You tell me, people.

  1. I’m thinking they’ll be more convenient when I’m trying to change a diaper at 3 AM and I don’t have to deal with snaps. 🙂 PS – my mom is also on Team Gown. She recruited me.

YES – gown – I have two young boys and I’m a HUGE HUGE fan! Sooooo much easier to change diapers, and in the summertime, when it’s hot, their little legs can breathe! Plus, it’s classic and old fashioned and chic. 😉

  3. Kelly V says:

They make some convertible ones too – that snap either into a gown or into legs – and that’s easier in car seats. Otherwise, you just ooch the gown up a little to buckle.

  4. #1 and #4 are super duper cute but I’m on Team No Go on the gown. Maybe I had a small newborn but I couldn’t find him in that gown to do a diaper change…all I found was gown

  5. I vote no gown, I see the logic about ease of changing diapers in the middle of the night but I am with ak, my girls were so little they somehow always wiggled out of their diapers in the gowns.

  6. Team Gown all the way! So much easier at those 12, 2. 4 am diaper changes. Plus they are so cute!

  7. Gown all the way. I had an extremely impatient baby and she hated being on her back. If I had to deal with snaps (remember you have to open and close them) I was never able to get it all done fast enough. You change a lot of diapers and the gown makes it so much easier.

Later on (age 2) we overnight potty trained in regular gowns for the ease of use also.

  8. Gown for sure! My little guy was 9 pounds when he was born, so no losing him, that’s for sure. It was also super easy to swaddle him. Not to mention he looked sooo cute! Now that I am on the topic, check out these swaddle blankets, pretty much the best thing ever! 🙂

  9. @Lauren I totally love those swaddle blankets too! They were great once my little guy got bigger.

  10. Team No Gown all the way. Even though the little booger may not be big enough to know, he will have lost all dignity wearing a gown.

  11. I was team gown but my son was not. He hated them with a white hot passion so we never used the ones I bought.

  12. eh, I could go either way, some kids fit/scrunch well in them, some kick out and render them pointless. The more/most important feature in clothing a newborn is something that you do not have to shove over their head, snaps that open wide or open the garment entirely ( like those convertible types that can be a gown or snap into legs, and snap all the way up the front) THOSE are really the best. Trying to convince a very tiny baby that you really do need to shove their head and arms into some impossibly small holes, not fun. Snaps, they way to go people.

  13. I could go either way as well. For my first, we both HATED them. She ended up somehow wiggling her feet/legs out of them every time and they got all scrunched up around her. I used them a bit more for my second though. She seemed to like them better. Mostly she slept in a onsie and one of these: http://www.kiddopotamus.com/p_swad.php and was happy as can be.

  14. My little bro is MUCH younger and I remember the middle of the night diaper changes being easier with the gown (no snaps for my sleepy brain to maneuver). You can always buy a pack of 3 from Target just to test drive them and if your little guy hates them, donate them to a local shelter or pass them on to a prego friend 🙂 They’re really just for newborns anyway and he’ll grow out of that stuff so fast so you don’t need to invest in a ton of them – especially if they’re only used for jammies.

When you will be chaging 12+ diapers in a day – and half are in the middle of the night – the last thing you want to do is snap anything except your head to the pillow – the gown saved me because I could literally do it with my eyes closed at 2 am – best thing ever!

  16. Gowns made my life a helluva lot easier in the middle of the night!
