Christmas in Review: Sarah

The Holidays this year could not have been better…ok, I could have done without the chilling cold and the torrential downpours, but other than that, it was a great low-key, and relaxing time!

I also must have been VERY good this year because Santa was VERY nice to me. Check out some of the loot:

  1. Michele 18mm Patent Leather Watch Strap
  2. Nikon D3100 Digital Camera
  3. “What to Cook and How to Cook it”
  4. McKenna Travel Folio

New Year’s Survey: Der

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?

Birthed a bouncing baby boy! Ouch.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

You know, I typically don’t make resolutions mainly because I don’t keep them. I am making some BIG ones for 2011 though.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Do I count?? What about me! Um, there were babies everywhere in 2010 and apparently that will also hold true for 2011. Bring on the babies!!

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My brave father in law passed away recently after a long battle with cancer. I am forever grateful that he was able to meet our son. He was admirable in so many ways and we miss him every day.

5. What countries did you visit?

Um, none. Same answer as last year. I spent the entire year preggers, so there was very little traveling.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you didn’t have in 2010?

A waistline.

7. What dates from 2010 will be etched upon your memory, and why?

February 6th, 2010.. the day I found out I was expecting AJ.

March 18th, 2010… the first time I laid eyes on my little gummi bear.

June 20th 2010…. I saw a tiny weenie.. not the dog variety. It’s a boy!

October 7th, 2010…the day we welcomed our precious son into the world.

8. What was your biggest achievement of this year?

Bringing another life into the world. Beat that. Haha.

9. What was your biggest failure?

dude, this question is so hard. I don’t know. I’m trying to stay positive here…not trying to force on some depression or something.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

morning sickness sucks donkey balls.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I would have to say baby gear. There seems to be a theme with all my answers.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

My husband’s. He put up with some mega mood swings, emotional breakdowns, financial changes and losing his father all while prepping for the biggest gig he ever took on.. being a daddy. I’m so proud of him and what he does for our family.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

I’m gonna take the high road.

14. Where did most your money go?

Baby, baby stuff…thankfully not to doctors or hospitals because apparently being a fireman has perks in insurance, not paychecks.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Finding out the sex of my child. I couldn’t sleep for days prior. Oh, and of course his birth. That’s a story that I’ll save for another day, but man was it exciting! Like the movies kind of exciting.

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?

Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. I LOVE that song, specifically the Glee version.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer?

Infinitely Happier….babies have that effect on you.

Fatter.. .again babies tend to have that effect on you.

Poorer…  again with the babies.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Looked around, enjoyed time with friends and family. I feel like I looked up and the year is over.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Worry, everything always works out the way it’s supposed to…I’m gonna keep the same answer as last year on this one. I really do need to stop the worrying.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

With family at several different houses. The hubs worked so, that was a bummer.

21. Did you fall in love with 2010?

Sure, why not. It had some super duper good times, but there were several major lows too. Overall I would say definitely a year to remember.

22. What was your favorite TV program?

Modern Family, Private Practice and Glee

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

I don’t hate anyone. Ever. But this year sure did test that in a real big way.

24. What was the best book you read?

Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy and Knocked Up by Rebecca Eckler (hey! I did read this year!)

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I don’t think I discovered anything musical this year, but I sure do dig the glee soundtracks.

26. What did you want and get?

A baby. And a third weiner dog.

27. What did you want and not get?

I think I got everything I wanted. Ok, maybe not a new car…but I’ll take a bambino over a car anyday.

28. What was your favorite film of 2010?

I honestly can’t remember the names of any movies right now. So, I’m guessing none of them made that big of an impression.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 26 and all my Tipsy gals, family and friends threw me my first ever surprise party and it was weiner dog themed!

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

I would have to say that this year was pretty satisfying on it’s own. It doesn’t need any help.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2010?

More casual than ever before.. between maternity wear and post partum, I didn’t stand too much of a chance fashion-wise.

32. What kept you sane?

My husband. He really does know how to reel my ass in when I get a case of the crazies.

33. What political issue stirred you the most?

I don’t do politics.

34. Who did you miss?

I missed seeing my friends regularly for adult evenings. I think those went down drastically with all the preggos we got running around.

35. Who was the best new person you met?

Aiden James, my son. I’m gonna go on record and say the best person I’ve ever met. Ever.

36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.

Everything happens for a reason. It really and truly does.

37. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

“It won’t be like this for long” Darius Rucker

New Year’s Survey: AK

  1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?

Navigated the SAHM waters.  We fell into a routine and I have really enjoyed it, though some days are very hard.  I mean it’s hard work to entertain a 2 year old all day every day!

  2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Last year I did make resolutions and I never had before. Resolutions I did keep:  Had more date nights, saw more movies, organized, and read more.  I definitely did all of those!  Things I didn’t keep: walk every day–Texas just gets too crazy weather-wise..I don’t think an every day type of thing is feasible. The quilt…hmm it’s definitely been on my mind and I definitely have talked about it a lot and I have everything ready to go but I am skeered.  I need someone to hold my hand while I get started.  I am definitely going to make more resolutions for 2011 but probably not as many.

  3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

YES! Several babies were born in 2010!  Der had a baby boy for one…and several other friends had babies as well.

  4. Did anyone close to you die?

    No

  5. What countries did you visit?

None, booooo! I didn’t even get out of Texas this year!

  6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

I would say vacation but I don’t think it’s going to happen.  But something that we didn’t have in 2010 that we will have in 2011 is a new baby brother or sister for our little guy!

  7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

June was my birthday and my hubby took off work and took me to the first showing of Twilight Eclipse because it came out that day and then we went and ate sushi.  That was a pretty great day.  September we found out we were going to have another little person in our house!

  8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Honestly I don’t think I stressed or worried as much as I did last year.  Huge achievement, BIG! Go me!

  9. What was your biggest failure?

I would say I generally think things are harder to do than they really are. When in fact they are probably easier than I realize.

  10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Other than my yearly tonsillitis that I get, I was barely sick this year at all–it was AMAZING!

  11. What was the best thing you bought?

My iPhone.  I was very reluctant to switch from my Blackberry but man oh man do I love this iPhone!

  12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

I have to say my hubby and my kiddo.  My hubby for being such a hard worker and my kiddo just continues to amaze me with what he learns each and every day.

  13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Nobody really…After the year my hubby and I had in 2009, I don’t think anyone can really top the appalling and depressing bit anymore. It would take a lot honestly….

  14. Where did most of your money go?

    Savings and Bills…BOOOORING!

  15. What did you get really excited about?

Finding out that we will have a new little bebe coming in 2011

  16. What song will always remind you of 2010?

I don’t think you could get away from California Gurls by Katy Perry if you tried.  Or how bout Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now…good lord that was played a lot…and didn’t it come out in 2009? Ugh.

  17. Compared to this time last year, are you: a)happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c)richer or poorer?

a)happier b) fatter–I’m literally rounding out the end of this year preggers c)richer

  18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

    Traveling

  19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Stepping on matchbox cars? That shit hurts when you are barefoot!

  20. How did you spend Christmas?

Christmas Eve with the hubs family eating tamales, rice, and beans.  My kiddo got one of these from his grandpa and at one point a fence post was brought in during the assembly–don’t ask.  Christmas day consisted of heading over to my moms after opening our gifts at home and having our traditional apricot bread and sausage casserole breakfast.  Then we opened presents and played for a while before heading home for a nap and then going back to play and have dinner. (we obviously live very close to my parents house)

  21. Did you fall in love in 2010?

cliche but yes, I fall in love more and more with my little family we have going here.

  22. What was your favorite TV program?

The Good Wife.  I’ve said this before but man, this was by far the best new show on tv this year.

  23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

    nah

  24. What was the best book you read?

At the end of last year I had just finished Twilight…so this year I finished out the saga and I have to say it was great entertainment.  My reading declined severely with my kiddo’s sleep regressions and upped activity level (i.e. constant running nonstop from 6:30a on…)  I honestly didn’t read as much as I wished I had this year, but I started off strong I think!

  25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I’m mainly a country music listener but I did love the hell out of  Pink’s Funhouse album.

  26. What did you want and get?

I don’t think I really knew I wanted this, but I got my son saying “I wuv you mama” and man it just KILLS ME. Love it!

  27. What did you want and not get?

    A vacation

  28. What was your favorite film of this year?

I haven’t seen True Grit, The Fighter, Rabbit Hole or Black Swan yet, so I can’t say if those are my favorite yet.  I’ll say Remember Me with Rob Pattinson was very haunting.  Most anticipated this year were probably Toy Story 3 and Twilight Eclipse (I know I know).  I know I was in the minority when I say that Eat Pray Love was disappointing. Oh, The Town was really good!

  29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 35 this year and though I don’t feel old, man that number sounds old.  My hubby took off work and we went to the first showing of Twilight Eclipse because it came out on my birthday and then we went and ate sushi for lunch!

  30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More quality time with my husband.

  31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?

um casual? ha! Staying home I definitely lounged out when we had no place to go but when we did, it was mainly jeans.  No sequins for me this year!

  32. What kept you sane?

My husband, hands down. He knows when I’m heading into a downward spiral and he knows that we need to talk about whatever is making me crazy until I go blue in the face…because that’s how I roll.

  33. What political issue stirred you the most?

    Not a politics person.

  34. Who did you miss?

I gotta say my girls…while we did do lunches and dinners here and there it was definitely hard to get all four of us at the same place at the same time.  We just have to keep trying!

  35. Who was the best new person you met?

Though we haven’t met in person, Danielle from elleinadspir.com definitely the best new person I met this year!

  36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.

“Good things happen when you most need them to” combined with “Things can only go up from here”.

  37. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

“The Best is Yet To Come” –Frank Sinatra

As my own little addition to this survey I thought I’d directly steal Whoorl’s idea of including a year in iPhone pics.  It just really brings to light when you have a little one, how much they grow in the blink of an eye.  It also brought back some good times throughout the year with friends. I hope you enjoy my grainy unprofessional iPhone pics from 2010!

Olive Garden Brownies: The Perfect Holiday Treat

Are you in need of something thats so incredibly simple, but tastes amazing to take along with you to your in-laws or any other holiday gathering? Well, you are in luck. I recently attended a holiday gathering where I was introduced to the most fantastic form of a brownie I’ve ever devoured. These have passed my taste test. In fact, they passed all 12 times.

Make your brownies from a mix. Don’t go all fancy and homemade… it won’t matter.

Once your brownies are done, unwrap enough Andes mint candies (you know those super awesome mints that Olive Garden gives you at the end with your check… totally one of my favorite things about OG) to solidly cover the entire top of the brownies.

Pop them back in the oven for a few minutes to melt the candy. Remove once melted and smooth over the top with a spoon.

Refrigerate until the candy topping is hardened once again.

Cut and I dare you to eat just one.

Thanks Erin for introducing me to these. (or no thanks actually… because my ass won’t be thanking you when my pants won’t fit)

Sarah’s Christmas Traditions

Everyone has their own traditions that they use to celebrate the Holidays with…you know, those things that make the Holidays special and unique to you and your family. I thought I’d share a few of mine, but I also want to hear about yours!

  1. Gas Station Lotto: I’m not sure how this game started, but I assume it was a way to keep my sister and I occupied and away from presents…Anyway, the entire family loads up and heads to a gas station in our small town, we each buy $10 worth of scratch off tickets. Then, we scratch those off and use the winnings at the next gas station. We do this until there is one person left with $$$ and that person is the winner! (Yes, this may be a little weird and/or a little white trash, but it’s oh so fun!)
  2. Christmas Presents: Christmas Eve vs. Christmas Day? We’re Christmas Eve people…
  3. Homemade Chile and Tamales: Our traditional Christmas Eve dinner.
  4. Steak: Our “not so traditional” Christmas day lunch! (We’re not really turkey and dressing people.)
  5. Stockings: Of course, Santa Claus comes and fills our stockings to open Christmas morning!

Comfy Christmas Clothes

I have picked out my outfit for Christmas day and it’s definitely on the comfy side. Dressy where it counts but able to eat multiple meals throughout the day and still recover comfortably.

  1. Mossimo Layering Pullover, Target
  2. Multi Colored Stone Stretch Bracelet, Charlotte Russe
  3. Corral Python Cross Boots, Langston’s
